Why is so much Sargassum washing onto our shores? Where does it come from, what does it mean for coastal ecosystems and human health, and how might we learn to live—and even work—with it?


Presented by the TOUT-MONDE Art FOUNDATION (TMAF) and hosted on Sept 17th by the Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) with the support of Winthrop King Institute and Villa Albertine, HOMO SARGASSUM is a multidisciplinary public program exploring the environmental, cultural, and anthropological dimensions of the rapidly increasing presence of Sargassum across Florida and the Caribbean.


Bringing together film, performance, scientific research, artistic practice, and conversation, this special PAMM program features multidisciplinary artist Dr. Henri Tauliaut, FIU food scientist Dr. Imran Ahmad, and curator Vanessa Selk to examine how Sargassum is transforming coastlines, ecosystems, economies, and everyday life across the region.

Moving between scientific inquiry and artistic imagination, HOMO SARGASSUM asks not only how we can respond to this new ecological reality, but also what new forms of knowledge, adaptation, and coexistence might emerge from it.


Co-conceived by artist Louisa Marajo and curator Vanessa Selk, HOMO SARGASSUM was first presented in Martinique before developing into an exhibition co-curated with Dr. Michael Carrasco presented at the Museum of Fine Arts at Florida State University in Tallahassee and the United Nations Headquarters in New York, and published by the Museum of Fine Arts at Florida State University  in the book titled HOMO SARGASSUM (2025), co-edited by Martin Munro and Vanessa Selk.

HOMO SARGASSUM

Based on an idea seeded by Louisa Marajo, this multidimensional and multi-year project co-written and co-conceived with Vanessa Selk, has been inviting over 30 Caribbean artists, scientists, scholars and bio-tech experts to reflect on the ecological, cultural and anthropological implications of the proliferation of the Sargassum seaweed on Caribbean coasts and populations in colonial/post-colonial contexts.
