HOMO SARGASSUM

Based on an idea seeded by Louisa Marajo, this multidimensional and multi-year project co-written and co-conceived with Vanessa Selk, has been inviting over 30 Caribbean artists, scientists, scholars and bio-tech experts to reflect on the ecological, cultural and anthropological implications of the proliferation of the Sargassum seaweed on Caribbean coasts and populations in colonial/post-colonial contexts.

HOMO SARGASSUM is an art & science exhibition and multidisciplinary program that raises public awareness about oceanic pollution through the lens of the sargassum seaweed. The proliferation of these algae across the Atlantic and on Caribbean coasts since 2011 has had wide-ranging environmental, economic, social and health-related impacts for coastal communities and ecosystems.

HOMO SARGASSUM invites artists, scientists, researchers and scholars from the Caribbean and beyond to share their perspectives on the causes and consequences of the sargassum proliferation, and to present their works that seek potential solutions to this scourge.

First presented at the Museum of Fine Arts of Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida (September 2024-March 2025), the exhibition is now brought to the United Nations to celebrate World Ocean Month and to contribute to rethinking Sustainable Development Goal 14 in the light of the high-level 2025 United Nations Ocean Conference, co-hosted by France and Costa Rica from 9 to 13 June 2025, in Nice, France. As the United Nations calls on States to intensify efforts to Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources, this exhibition invites viewers to reflect on what can be done individually and collectively to change our relation to the Ocean.

An exhibition initiated by Louisa Marajo, curated by Vanessa Selk, with the curatorial support of Youna Esposito, presented by the TOUT-MONDE Art FOUNDATION (TMAF), and endorsed by the Permanent Representations of France and Barbados to the United Nations.

Additional support for this exhibit provided by the Winthrop-King Institute for French and Francophone Studies; Etant donné, a program of Villa Albertine; Rubis Mécénat and its program Inpulse; as well as by the following generous individual donors: Sarah Arison, Michele Segalla, Debra Therit and Fausto and Linda DelaCruz, whose names shall be remembered by future generations for making a change to preserve our Oceans.
